A Pair of Victorian Granulated Gold Earrings
A fine pair of Victorian gold earrings, the circular upper section supporting a fluted bar from which suspends a large graduating cylindrical drop, flanked by smaller drops to either side. The entire surface is decorated with intricate granulation and delicate wirework.
Granulation — the technique of applying tiny gold spheres to a surface to create texture and pattern — requires considerable skill and precision. In the Victorian period, such work reflected both technical mastery and a fascination with archaeological revival styles, drawing inspiration from ancient Etruscan goldsmithing. The combination of sculptural form, fine wire ornamentation, and richly textured gold gives the earrings depth and movement.
Mounted in 14ct yellow gold.
English, circa 1875.
